SOMERSET

ABSTRACTS OF SOMERSET WILLS
Collected by Rev. Frederick Brown
Originally Published by F. A. Crisp

One night in 1942, Somerset and Devon lost one of the most important research sources for local and family historians, when a German bomb destroyed the Exeter Probate Office, and all of the wills that it contained. This being the case collections of transcripts and extracts of wills are so important to those of us with connections to these counties.
One of the most important sources for Somerset is the
collection of abstracts that was made by the Reverend
Frederick Brown at the end of the 19th century, these
were published in six volumes between 1887 and 1890
by Frederick Crisp. Only one hundred and fifty sets were
ever produced and their rarity is reflected in the price of
those that do occasionally come up for sale.

This CD contains digitised version of all six volumes,
that is fully searchable and will prove invaluable to anyone
studying the local or their family history in Somerset.

THE
SOMERSET PROTESTATION RETURNS
and

LAY SUBSIDY ROLLS 1641-42

Transcribed by A. J. Howard
Edited and Published by T. L. Stoate

In the year of 1641 it was demanded that every man over the age of 18 should make an oath was to follow the “true Protestant religion”. These are now called the Protestation Returns and form a valuable list of inhabitants of a parish at this time. Not everyone signed and those who did refuse are also sometimes noted. Whilst only about a third of Somerset parishes have survived ( 161 ) it still lists over 22,000 names and is an important Somerset reference work which will be of great use to Genealogists and Family Historians. It is in Adobe Acrobat format and so can be easily searched and read on most computers. A must for anyone with Somerset Ancestors.

THE MYNSTER ON THE ILE

or, The Story of the Ancient Parish of Ilminster, the one Royal Peculiar in the County of Somerset

by

James Street M.A.

Published in 1904 this is probably the most complete history of Ilminster ever written which certainly has not been bettered since this date. In his preface the author “professes neither antiquarian learning nor literary finish: but he thinks he can distinguish that which interests ordinary folk; and claims to have discovered a wealth of interesting matter, connected with the history of the town of which he has been Vicar”.

Starting with the coming of the Normans it continues to the late nineteenth century, with the Churchwardens Accounts Henry VIII – Edward VI printed in full, sections on the Black Death, Nonconformity, Monmouth and many others, makes this rare book on CD, with over four hundred pages, invaluable for historians and genealogists alike.

MYTHS, SCENES AND WORTHIES
OF SOMERSET
b y
Mrs. E. Boger

In this publication the author has somewhat departed from her original intention of making a collection of myths and legends of Somerset. Unwittingly, fiction glided into fact and the story developed into history, and it was found difficult, if not impossible, to define their respective limits.

This has meant that we have a book of 650 plus pages containing fascinating information including King Alfred, Glastonbury after the Conquest, the Duke of Monmouth, St Keyna the virgin, witches and the Philosophers of Somerset to name a few of over eighty different chapters on varying subjects.

This CD book is a “must” for anyone with an interest in the county of Somerset. Fully Searchable

IN TAUNTON TOWN
by
E. Everett-Green

---------------------

A Story of the Rebellion of
James Duke of Monmouth

---------------------

Published in 1901 this is a story revolving around the Battle of Sedgemoor through the eyes of one Dicon Snowe who was born on a farm between Bridgwater and Taunton.

All too often, when researching, we are just given the dry facts without the story behind them and the effect that they had on the ordinary population. Whilst not one hundred percent factually correct this publication is ideal for those who enjoy a good story that is based on historical information and an excellent way to understand the effect of this uprising had locally. A superb read. Fully Searchable

THE MARCH OF WILLIAM OF ORANGE THROUGH SOMERSET
With a notice of other local events in the time of
King James II A.D. 1688
by
Emanuel Green

In 1671 Charles II's brother James, Duke of York, startled the nation by announcing that he was a papist. This caused a great concern among the Protestants and many attempts were made to stop James from becoming King.

In February 1685 Charles died and despite the attempts to exclude James, he was crowned King. Later that year the Duke of Monmouth made an unsuccessful attempt to take the throne. Eventually in 1688 William was “invited” to invade England and he eventually landed at Brixham in Devon.

This publication gives an excellent account of the progress of William through Somerset by the use of letters and documents gathered from various sources by the author. A useful book in any collection of Somerset
